Love comics like I love poems

I’m a fan of comics and graphic novels. Specially the obscure ones that not many people have heard of. I love the way poetry and drawing can find a path together and intersect.

Have a look at this comic taken from ‘Map of my Heart’ by John Porcellino. It’s a strange book mapping memory, relationships and selfhood.  During a period of isolation following a divorce, Porcellino created this book which mixes so many mediums together. From ‘how to’ guides to comics, to prose and diary entries. This book is a beautiful reflection on growing up.

In the comic above we see classic John Porcellino. He captures those moments in life with so much clarity and personality.

I was wondering if you could do the same in a couple of freewrites.

  1. Look closely at the frames in the image. There is a lot of dialogue replaced. There is a lot of information spoken through body language.

  2. Describe each frame in 3 lines. So in total you’ll have 12 lines.

  3. Create a script with stage directions. Do it in a five minute frenzy. Write down what the two people are saying but also think about what the boy’s body language is doing and why.

  4. Now you’re going to continue the story. What is it that the boy is going to tell the girl?

  5. Where you go from here is really up to you. Consider which bits of your writing is working?

Enjoy!
